The Citizen Environmental Journalism (CEJ) initiative, coordinated by The Cropper Foundation under the GA-LLA Caribbean programme, is seeking passionate citizen journalists from across the Caribbean to participate in a regional programme designed to strengthen skills in environmental and climate storytelling.
Through a Regional Capacity Building Workshop and a Community of Practice and Knowledge Co-Creation Programme, participants will develop practical skills to document and communicate environmental challenges, climate impacts, community resilience, and locally led adaptation (LLA) solutions.

About the Programme
The CEJ Initiative aims to build a network of citizen journalists who can amplify local voices and stories on environmental and climate issues across the Caribbean.
Stories have the power to make climate impacts visible, inspire action, and connect decision-makers with community realities. Through citizen journalism, communities can document their own experiences and contribute directly to public conversations on resilience and adaptation.
Selected participants will engage in training, peer learning, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing activities designed to strengthen environmental communication and storytelling skills.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Strengthen environmental and climate journalism skills;
- Develop multimedia storytelling and content creation techniques;
- Learn approaches for documenting locally led adaptation and community resilience;
- Engage with experts, practitioners, and fellow storytellers from across the region;
- Participate in a regional Community of Practice and Knowledge Co-Creation Programme; and
- Contribute to regional awareness and knowledge-sharing on climate and environmental issues.
Training Topics
Topics include:
- Climate change & climate justice;
- Locally led adaptation (LLA);
- Environmental and climate reporting;
- Ethical and responsible journalism.
- Community-centred reporting;
- Storytelling for impact;
- Multimedia content creation;
- Digital communication and audience engagement.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Be proficient in English;
- Reside in Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Jamaica, Suriname, or Trinidad and Tobago;
- Have training, experience, or demonstrated skills in journalism, communications, media, storytelling, advocacy, or related fields;
- Demonstrate an interest in environmental, climate, or community issues;
- Have experience working with community groups, NGOs, or public engagement activities related to environmental, climate, or social issues;
- Be available to actively participate throughout the programme.
Application Process

As part of the application form, you will also be required to upload one original sample of work that demonstrates your communication or storytelling abilities related to environmental, climate, or community issues.

- Podcasts or audio recordings;
- Social media campaigns; or
- Other creative communication products.
The sample should demonstrate your ability to communicate clearly, engage audiences, and highlight environmental challenges, climate impacts, community resilience, or locally led solutions.
Please note: We encourage applicants to submit original work that reflects their own voice, creativity, and communication skills. AI-generated content will not be considered during the review process.
Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed through a competitive assessment process. Selection will consider:
- Motivation and interest in the programme;
- Awareness of environmental, climate, or community issues;
- Relevant experience and skills;
- Quality and relevance of the submitted work sample;
- Commitment to participation; and
- Community engagement experience.
Final selection will also seek to ensure diverse representation across participating countries and communities.
